We are looking for a motivated Hardware Design Intern / Working Student to join our Hardware team and support the development of medical imaging products.
In this role, you will work closely with experienced hardware engineers and gain hands-on exposure to the full product lifecycle: from early mechanical design and prototyping to testing, documentation, and support of production and logistics.
This is a practical, learning-oriented role, ideal for engineering students who want real-world experience in hardware product development within a fast-growing healthtech company.
Tasks● Support mechanical and hardware product development, including new designs and improvements to existing products
● Create and modify CAD designs using Autodesk Fusion 360
● Prepare and execute 3D prototyping (mainly FDM using Prusa printers; occasional SLA)
● Assist in testing and validation of prototypes and products
● Prepare technical drawings and support tolerance definition
● Support design for manufacturing activities (SLS, CNC) and cost optimization
● Help maintain technical documentation (BOMs, manufacturing and assembly instructions)
● Assist with product lifecycle management, including version control and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
● Support product assembly, packaging, and logistics activities when required
● Collaborate with hardware, supply chain, and production stakeholders
Requirements● Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Biomedical Engineering, or similar
● Basic experience with CAD design (Fusion 360 preferred)
● Interest in hardware development, prototyping, and manufacturing
● Hands-on mindset and willingness to work with physical products and tools
● Ability to work in a structured way and document your work clearly
● Good communication skills in English (spoken and written)
Nice to have
● Experience with 3D printing (FDM and/or SLA)
● Basic understanding of manufacturing processes (CNC, SLS, injection molding)
● Familiarity with technical drawings and tolerances
● Interest in medical devices or regulated products
● Experience with tools such as Blender, Inkscape, or slicers (PrusaSlicer, Lychee)
What we expect from Custom Surgical candidates
● You are curious and eager to learn
● You take ownership of your tasks and follow them through
● You are open to feedback and enjoy working in a collaborative environment
● You appreciate working in a young, international, and fast-moving startup
● You are comfortable switching between design, prototyping, and practical tasks
BenefitsWhat you can get from Custom Surgical
● Hands-on experience across the full hardware product lifecycle
● Direct mentorship from experienced hardware engineers
● Flexible working hours compatible with your studies
● A collaborative, low-bureaucracy environment
● Exposure to real medical devices used in clinical environments
